WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-NJ) today announced more than $4.5 million in federal Sandy relief grants to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, South Amboy and Ocean County to cover costs of restoration projects as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The grants are provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance grant program.

“Our entire state continues on its path to full recovery from Superstorm Sandy with the help of federal relief grants like these,” said Senator Menendez, who helped lead the New Jersey delegation in the fight for federal Sandy relief. “This funding will help pay for rebuilding critical public facilities that were profoundly affected by Superstorm Sandy as well as emergency measures taken during the storm. I remain committed to making sure that New Jersey communities receive the resources necessary to come back better and stronger than before.”

“Superstorm Sandy took a devastating toll on many communities in New Jersey, but each grant announced brings us one step closer to our goal of full recovery, “ Booker said. “I am extremely pleased to join my colleague, Senator Menendez, to announce much-needed relief to aid in our efforts and look forward to working with FEMA to ensure that the federal government remains committed to New Jersey’s recovery.”

The funding announced today includes:

  • $1,003,338.41 to Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission to support the dredging and disposal of debris deposited at the docking area of the Sludge Storage Facility at Newark Bay as a result of the Sandy.
  • $2,012,429.20 to South Amboy to fund repair to the pedestrian bridge, walkway, lighting, and berms at the City Waterfront Park damaged as a result of Sandy.
  • $1,518,808.26 to reimburse Ocean County for emergency protective measures to perform search and rescue operations, evacuations and secure temporary facilities for facilities destroyed or damaged as a result of Sandy.

FEMA provides funding for these projects directly to the State. It is the State's responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-grantees receive these awards. Following the State's review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentation, they will provide funds to the sub-grantees on a reimbursable basis.
