WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) today joined his Senate colleagues in a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler advocating for rules to protect and promote an open Internet.
“The principles of openness, non-discrimination, and the free flow of information are fundamental to economic growth and entrepreneurship fostered by the Internet,” Sen. Booker said. “I support reclassification of broadband because it’s the most effective way to preserve the open Internet.”
In January, the D.C. Circuit Court partially remanded the FCC’s net neutrality rules. The Commission is now tasked with reinstating rules that will protect net neutrality and hold up to judicial scrutiny.
In the letter, the senators state:
“…The vitality and nondiscriminatory nature of this platform is at stake today. We must take steps to prevent broadband providers from creating Internet fast lanes for those who can pay, leaving others stuck in traffic. We need to prohibit paid prioritization, which would leave start-ups and small businesses to suffer in a new Internet slow lane, harming our economy and job growth.”
