Background, SSA and NJ:
- In New Jersey, more than 1.7 million people rely on Social Security payments.
- Social Security payments account for more than 50% of half a million New Jersey families’ incomes.
- More than three-in-four Americans worry that Social Security will not support them through their retirement and old age.
Background, SSA and Trump:
In Trump’s seven months in office, New Jerseyans and Americans across the country who rely on Social Security have had to contend with:
- Workforce Reductions: Because of DOGE cuts, the SSA was forced to reduce its workforce by 12%, causing concerns about customer service and timely benefit access despite increases in social security benefit demand.
- Threats to Personal Privacy: Contrary to established legal requirements, DOGE has sought access to sensitive social security data, including data on children.
