In case you missed it, U.S Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilled Emil Bove III, the nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit about his conduct, ethics, and judgment.

Booker slams Trump judicial nominee: ‘Complete disregard for the rule of law’

By Colleen Murphy

“The White House nominated Mr. Bove, over my, and Senator (Andy) Kim’s strong objections, while we were in the process of actually interviewing the other candidates the White House itself proposed,” said Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., a member of the Judiciary Committee.

The controversy escalated Tuesday after a whistleblower report accused Bove of instructing Justice Department attorneys to defy court orders in deportation cases—allegations he forcefully denied during the hearing.

Booker and all other Democratic members of the committee filed a professional misconduct complaint against Bove with the New York State Bar.

“There is no scenario under which the White House counsel could believe that this nomination would be acceptable,” Booker said. “Moreover, Mr. Bove’s record makes it clear that he has no business serving a lifetime on the federal bench.”

Booker added, “Mr. Bove has a complete disregard for the rule of law.”

“I don’t understand how we are seriously considering someone for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench who has such disregard for court orders,” Booker said during the hearing.

Trump judicial nominee Emil Bove denies whistleblower allegations at hearing

Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) — who has said he opposes Bove’s nomination — voiced concern that the nominee would continue to work on behalf of the Trump administration as a judge.

“What’s your red line? I really wonder,” Booker said. “What could the president ask you to do that you wouldn’t do?”

Bove Denies Suggesting Justice Dept. Ignore Court Orders

By Devlin Barrett

Senator Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey, asked about a fateful meeting Mr. Bove had with those prosecutors. In that meeting, Mr. Bove dangled the possibility of a promotion to any lawyer who would sign a motion seeking dismissal of the case against Mr. Adams, according to people familiar with the events.

At the end of the questioning, Mr. Booker suggested that Mr. Bove might have lied to the lawmakers.

“I am hoping that more evidence is going to come out that showed that you lied before this committee,” Mr. Booker said.

Emil Bove accused of perjury, evasiveness at tough Senate hearing for federal judgeship

Booker, fellow Senate Dems call Bove’s nomination unacceptable as GOP stands by Trump’s pick

By Joey Fox

Democrats say that Bove was being willfully evasive – New Jersey Senator Cory Booker went so far as to accuse Bove of perjury – and listed it as yet one more reason Bove should not be confirmed to a lifetime judgeship in a New Jersey-based seat. But with President Donald Trump strongly behind Bove, whom he nominated (and once employed as his personal lawyer), Republicans on the committee were far more amenable to Bove and downplayed his past controversies.

As is typical for judicial nominations in the U.S. Senate, today’s hearing did not include a vote; that will likely come sometime in July. In the weeks leading up to then, Booker and his fellow Democrats said they’ll work to convince enough of their Republican colleagues to vote against Bove’s nomination, either in committee or on the Senate floor.

“I think there is a lot of evidence here that’s going to cast a shadow over this nomination in the eyes of a lot of Republicans in the Senate,” Booker said during a press gaggle following today’s hearing.

“We’re hoping that will be enough for him to lose the support of the Senate,” he added.

Emil Bove, Trump's former personal lawyer, faces renewed scrutiny for federal court seat

By Erin Mansfield

"I don’t understand how we are seriously considering someone for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench who has such disregard for court orders," Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, said during Bove's confirmation hearing Wednesday.

Booker, from New Jersey, said read off documents that described Bove as, "vindictive," "always looking for leverage and power," "a prosecutor version of a drunk driver."

"The pattern didn’t just begin when you were nominated by this president," Booker said. "Peers of yours, prosecutors, attorneys who served with you, and judges in your past years have again and again cited you as someone who is not capable or qualified of doing this job which you are nominated for."

"Mr. Bove's record of alleged abuse of power, ethical lapses, dishonesty, and unstable, abusive behavior during his tenure as a federal prosecutor warrants a thorough review of his employment history at SDNY by members of the Judiciary Committee," wrote Sens. Cory Booker, Peter Welch, Mazie Hirono, Sheldon Whitehouse, Richard Blumenthal, Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla.
