WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement:

“Letitia James defeated Donald Trump in court, and he has been bent on revenge ever since. Today’s indictment of a sitting state attorney general is not an act of law enforcement; it is an act of retaliation. It is further evidence that this president has transformed the Department of Justice into an instrument of personal vengeance.

“When a respected, conservative career U.S. Attorney refused to participate in this abuse of power, the president dismissed him and installed a loyalist willing to weaponize the Justice Department against his perceived enemies. Lindsey Halligan has now crossed that line, delivering an indictment that is as lawless as it is political. This is a disgrace.

“This is not a political dispute, it is a constitutional crisis in motion before our eyes. It is the collapse of prosecutorial independence and the corruption of the rule of law. Every American should see this for what it is: the deliberate use of federal power to intimidate, punish, and silence.

“I urge my colleagues, especially Senate Republicans, to acknowledge this danger before it’s too late. It’s time for them to conduct genuine oversight, and to prove that their loyalty lies with the Constitution, not with the man dismantling it.”
