Washington, DC – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s visit to Camden, New Jersey.
“I am pleased that President Obama is visiting Camden, New Jersey, today to highlight the city’s efforts to expand economic opportunities and its implementation of cutting edge community policing strategies. Under Chief Scott Thompson’s leadership, the Camden County Police Department has made progress in lowering crime rates and increasing community engagement. I am proud of the work that our brave men and women in uniform are doing.
“As a former urban Mayor, I understand firsthand how technology enhances law enforcement’s ability to protect its citizens. That is why I am glad that the President is highlighting Camden’s expansion of technology initiatives today. Additionally, the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge will help build stronger ties with young men of color and law enforcement officials. We know disparities in opportunity that persist in disadvantaged communities hamper the potential of our young men of color. All of us have a moral obligation to be our brother’s keeper and this challenge will play a role in uplifting these young people and setting them on a path to succeed.
“Among my first actions as Senator was to support Camden’s Promise Zone effort, and I was proud to see the Administration name Camden a Promise Zone earlier this month. This designation -- and the support that comes with it from the federal government -- will improve the quality of life for Camden’s residents and help continue the growth the city is seeing under its current leadership.
“Due to the votes scheduled for this afternoon on the floor of the Senate, I unfortunately was unable to join the President today, but I am proud that he chose this great New Jersey city to talk about these important issues.”
