NEWARK, N.J. — Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) announced $191.6 million in funding for New Jersey programs he secured in the Fiscal Year 2024 government funding bills.
“One of my highest privileges and priorities in Washington is to fight to bring home federal resources to invest in worthy New Jersey projects,” Booker said. “The New Jersey projects funded in this bill include vital investments in our infrastructure and in the leaders who work tirelessly, often away from the limelight, to improve their communities. These projects will create jobs, grow local economies, improve healthcare, and protect families. I’m grateful to the organizations, community leaders, and government leaders who, with this funding, will further improve the quality of life for New Jerseyans.”
In total, Booker, working alongside New Jersey’s congressional delegation, secured $191.6 million for 150 projects in cities and townships across New Jersey for FY2024. This year’s award represents an increase in both the total funding and the number of individual projects Booker sponsored last year ($166.2 million for 130 projects).
“As Senator, it has been my ongoing priority to fight for the funding that New Jersey needs, and I’m proud to have directed even more federal funding back to New Jersey this year,” Booker said.
The latest government funding bill encompasses a range of projects aimed at improving community infrastructure, enhancing public services, and fostering sustainable development. It allocates resources for accessible buses for senior and disabled residents and the construction of affordable housing for veterans. Environmental initiatives receiving funding include tree planting, improving walkability in downtowns, and promoting public transportation.
Technology upgrades aimed at improving public safety and supporting small businesses received support, including investments in new police vehicles, security systems for municipal buildings, and technology to bolster small businesses. Warren Community College’s cutting-edge program to use unmanned systems technology to improve farm management—integrating technology and agriculture—was also funded.
Economic development and educational programs also received significant funding. The bill provides dollars to broaden the reach of the Hudson Scholars Program, improve vocational training in public safety, and construct facilities for medical education and mental health treatment.
Funding highlights include:
The projects funded by the bill reflect a comprehensive approach to enhancing New Jerseyans’ quality of life, lowering costs, improving public safety, and empowering students, veterans, first responders, and entrepreneurs.
Booker fought to defeat efforts from Republican House members to strike funding for any services designed to benefit the LGBTQ+ community from this year’s government funding bills. Among the threatened projects was a $400,000 award to New Jersey’s leading LGBTQ+ serving organization, Garden State Equality, to support LGBTQ+ youth with trauma-informed strategies.
“I’m proud to stand with New Jersey’s LGBTQ+ community,” Booker said. “We must fight back against attacks on their dignity and send a resounding message of compassion, inclusivity, and respect.”
