NEWARK, NJ – U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez (both D-N.J.) today introduced a bill to rename the Deptford Township, New Jersey post office the “Savatore S. Corma II Post Office Building” in honor of the sacrifice of First Lieutenant Salvatore S. Corma II — a United States Army soldier and native of Wenonah, New Jersey, who was tragically killed in action in Afghanistan six years ago.
“First Lieutenant Salvatore S. Corma II paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow soldiers from harm and defend our country,” said Sen. Booker, a member of the Senate committee overseeing the U.S. Postal Service. “We will forever owe First Lieutenant Corma a debt of gratitude and we know his legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service will live on through his loved ones and the lives he touched. Renaming the Deptford Township post office in his honor will serve as a daily tribute to his service and a reminder of sacrifice he made on behalf of the American people.”
“First Lt. Salvatore S. Corma II served with courage and distinction and ultimately gave his life in defense of this country and the freedoms we cherish,” said Sen. Menendez. “Dedicating Deptford Township’s post office in First Lt. Corma’s honor will serve as a lasting tribute and remind future generations of his service and sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation.”
First Lieutenant Salvatore S. Corma II, a United States Army soldier and a graduate of Deptford High School, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010 at the age of 24. His actions that day are credited with saving the lives of as many as 19 fellow service members. First Lieutenant Corma is also a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
Booker and Menendez’ bill is a companion to legislation introduced by Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) in October 2015 in the House of Representatives. The House unanimously passed the bill on April 18, 2016.
