Washington, DC – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement highlighting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s decision to extend the Sandy Claims Review deadline by 30 days and encouraging New Jersey residents affected by Superstorm Sandy to use the extended time to enroll in the claims review process. “For nearly three years, New Jerseyans have fought diligently to recover from Superstorm Sandy. The road to recovery for families across our state has been long, arduous and frustrating.
In addition to overcoming the long term effects of the storm, they have been troubled by widespread insurance claims underpayments. We know now that many residents who diligently paid into their insurance programs were cheated out of their claims. Since the claims process re-opened earlier this year, New Jerseyans have been able to take action to right these wrongs. A 30 day extension of this process will offer another chance for hard-working families who haven’t had time to enroll in the program to do so. Victims of Sandy should have never been burdened with this process in the first place, but the least we can do is ensure they are given the time they need to participate.”
