Washington–U.S. Sen. Cory A. Booker D-N.J., today issued the following statement afterthe U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve bipartisan passenger rail legislation:
“The House passage of the bipartisan passenger rail bill today is a good first step toward making critically necessary improvements to passenger rail infrastructure in the United States,” Sen. Booker said. “Allowing Amtrak to keep more revenue in the Northeast Corridor will speed vital improvements to this important part of our national passenger rail network. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as part of the debate over the surface transportation bill to make these provisions even stronger, particularly when it comes to securing critically important funding for the Gateway Tunnel and Portal Bridge that countless New Jerseyans depend on every day.”
Sen. Booker is the ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security, part of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. The subcommittee oversees interstate transportation policy issues and focuses on safety, security, and infrastructure development related to waterways, freight and passenger rail -- including Amtrak.
