WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement today ahead of the implementation of the next iteration of President Trump’s Muslim travel ban, set to take effect tonight at 8PM ET. Booker is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“Each cruel iteration of President Trump’s Muslim travel ban has been at odds with America’s most fundamental values and ideals, a repudiation of the idea that America is a land of refuge and hope for the persecuted and oppressed. Excluding immigrants on the basis of religion or national origin is un-American and doesn’t make us any safer.

“The Court blocked the Administration from imposing their ban on anyone with ‘a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity’ in the U.S.. But the Trump Administration has made clear that engaged people, same-sex couples, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins – and even grandparents and grandchildren – of persons in the United States will be blocked from entering under their ban. The Administration’s narrow interpretation of a ‘bona fide relationship’ defies common sense, is overly restrictive, and ignores what family means to most people.

“With their efforts to ban Muslim entry into the U.S., the Trump Administration has shown flagrant disregard for American values and the law at every turn, and this iteration of the Muslim ban is no exception.”
