Education bill falls short of investing in the potential and promise of all of our children, especially New Jersey’s most vulnerable students

Washington–U.S. Sen. Cory Booker D-N.J., issued the following statement after the Senate passed Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA) by a vote of 81-17:

“Today I voted to oppose passage of the Senate’s education bill.  This bill jeopardized Title I funding for New Jersey, which is a lifeline for underperforming school districts in my state, and didn’t provide meaningful accountability measures that address the disparate achievement gaps for low-income students and students of color. I cannot in good conscience support a bill that falls short of investing in the potential and promise of all of our children, especially New Jersey’s most vulnerable students. If we are truly going to invest in our children and grandchildren’s future, Congress must pass legislation that provides support, access, and opportunity to equip the next generation to succeed, regardless of their socioeconomic status.”
